Slipper Camp: Home

21317970_10154667537830957_958661983034598423_n

I’d like to invite you to my next available Slipper Camp.

The topic: Home.

Home is a breathtakingly universal need. After her great adventure, Dorothy realized, “There’s no place like home.” Robert Frost wrote, “Home is the place where, when you have to go there, they have to take you in.” Home might be where the heart is. It might be a person, a pet, a place… you name it. I’ve often felt hiraeth: a longing for a home that never was.

I hope you will be 1 of 10 writers who will receive 3 illustrated prompts about HOME every OTHER morning for 20 days along with daily writing tips and coaching suggestions. You will be writing 1,000 words (2 pages) on 1 of the 3 daily prompts and sending it to me by midnight every OTHER day. I will read them each day and we will talk about your writing at the end of Slipper Camp.

PM me for cost of tuition.
Limit: 10 writers
Starts: November 13th ends December 1st
Please let me know if you’re interested in joining us.
Payment secures your spot.

Slipper Camp: Love in the Time of Intolerance

Four spaces left!!

My next online writing Slipper Camp – Love in the Time of Intolerance – will hopefully inspire you to write about love and the audacity of hope. “Hope is a gift you don’t have to surrender,” wrote Rebecca Solnit, “a power you don’t have to throw away.”

Like the woman in the image above, you will be fighting for love and for hope, and your words will be your weapon. Every word you write will raise money for ACLU, RAISES and IRC, organizations that are fighting the horrific injustices at the Southern border.

I hope you will be one of the 10 writers who will receive illustrated prompts about “Love in the Time of Intolerance” every other morning for 20 days, along with coaching suggestions. You will be writing 1,000 words every OTHER DAY and sending them to me by midnight.

Slipper Camp – Mothers and Daughters

Due to popular demand, Slipper Camp – Mothers and Daughters – is back. It starts May 31st and ends on June 19th! Many mothers and daughters have taken this Slipper Camp together and loved it.

Hundreds of writers have taken this structured online writing course over the past nine years. They say the combination of structure and accountability has yielded some of their best writing. Novels, screenplays, a play, memoirs and numerous published articles have been generated in Slipper Camps.

I was inspired to create this Slipper Camp when I studied this photo of my mother and me. At three months old I’m already trying to crawl out of her arms. Eager to see the world. Unwilling to be contained. My mother smiles beatifically, unaware of the restless soul in her arms…

We’ll be writing about ourselves, our mothers and/or mother figures, our daughters-biological or chosen – nieces, goddaughters, stepdaughters or any young woman we mentor. We’ll be exploring the relationship between women of different generations.

As always, you can stay home and write in your pjs and slippers. As always, if you enroll you will receive 3 prompts a day (every other day) for 20 days. As always, you will write 1,000 words on a prompt of your choosing and send it to me. Email me for details – lspravina21@gmail.com.

Only open to the first ten writers who sign up.

Begins May 31st and ends June 19th.

Slipper Camp – the secrets we carry

I’d like to invite you to my next available Slipper Camp.

The topic: the secrets we carry.

All of us have secrets. In this online writing ‘Slipper Camp’ we will be writing about our secrets, both light and dark, our deepest fears and shames but also our secret strengths. That’s why I love the quote above from Marianne Williamson-that it is our potential and power that frightens us and keeps us small. That perhaps the greatest secret we carry is that of our own magnificence.

It will be the same format: 10 writers will receive 3 illustrated prompts about the secrets we carry every OTHER morning for 20 days along with daily writing tips and coaching suggestions.

Limit: 10 writers
Starts: March 26th ends April 13th
Please let me know if you’re interested in joining us.
Payment secures your spot.

Slipper Camp – FREEDOM

image1

Dear Writers,

Every January I start the year with a Slipper Camp topic that’s especially meaningful to me.

FREEDOM 2019 will be my next online writing Slipper Camp (Starts January 8th, ends 20 days later.)

FREEDOM. If you click on the photo below you’ll see what inspired me to create this particular Slipper Camp.

FREEDOM. We’ll be writing at a heightened time, a critical time in our lives and the life of this country and the world. We’ll be writing about freedoms we celebrate; freedoms denied to us or to others; our personal journeys from slavery to freedom or vice versa; times we’ve longed for freedom for ourselves and others; times we’ve fought for freedom and won or lost.

FREEDOM. There’s so much to write about. Especially now.

Slipper Camp will be the same format as always – 10 writers will receive 3 illustrated prompts about FREEDOM every OTHER morning for 20 days along with daily writing tips and coaching suggestions.

You’ll be writing 1,000 words (2 pages) on 1 of the 3 daily prompts and sending them to me by midnight every OTHER day. Whenever I get your words I’ll read them. At the end of Slipper Camp we’ll set a one-hour call to talk about your writings.

Hundreds of writers have taken this structured online writing course over the past 9 years. They say the combination of structure and accountability has yielded some of their best writing. Books, screenplays, a play, two novels, memoirs and numerous published articles have been generated in Slipper Camps.

Please join us. I’d love to read your words.

Limited to 10 writers. PS. Slipper Camp fills up in a heartbeat so please jump in if this speaks to you. THANK YOU!

Slipper Camp – Grandmothers and Grandkids

grandmas

I recently posted the piece below on Facebook. I was amazed at the response. Hundreds commented. Dozens shared my post. Until then I thought I was the only one whose life changed when my first grandchild was born. Now I know it’s not so. The bond between grandmas and grandkids goes deep. It’s a life-changer.

So, for the first time, I’m creating a Slipper Camp about that bond. Slipper Camp Grandmas and Grandkids starts October 15th/Ends November 2nd.

In this online writing course we will be writing about our relationships with our grandmothers and/or grandkids. Like the photo above, the child is deep within the heart of the grandmother, the grandmother deep within the heart of her grandchild.

This is for grandmas who are close to their grandkids and those who aren’t. For grandkids who are close to their grandmas and those who’ve lost them. It’s for those who want to write about that bond – the good, the bad, the ordinary.

Slipper Camp will be the same format as always: 10 writers will receive 3 illustrated prompts about grandmothers and grandkids every OTHER morning for 20 days along with daily writing tips and coaching suggestions. If you join you will send me 1,000 words by midnight every other day.

Starts October 15th/Ends November 2nd.
Limit: 10 writers
Please PM me for cost and more info.
Payment will secure your spot.

Thank you.

The piece that led to this Slipper Camp:

“I never had a grandmother or grandfather (Auschwitz) and I honestly never knew what I was missing. Then I became a grandmother ten years ago, when Jazz was born in a bathtub in Bali, delivered into the hands of legendary midwife Ibu Robin Lim.

The candlelit bathtub was filled with frangipani flowers. The room was open to the sky. My son and daughter-in-love were in each other’s arms as Jazz was about to be born.

The midwife asked us to chant prayers. Marcelle’s mother chanted in Hebrew. I chanted in Sanskrit. She asked Evan to say a few words to his daughter as she came into this world, the last words she would remember whenever she left this world.

It had been a long, difficult night. An agonizing labor. Many times I’d worried that this was a crazy plan. That they should have gone to the hospital. That Marcelle or the baby might die.

They were in a brand new house. It had no hot water. And they were having a water birth. “Get huge pots,” my son had instructed the day before. Throughout the long night we’d carried dozens of potfuls of hot water from the stove in the kitchen to the bathtub at the other end of the house. It felt nuts.

Then, in that candlelit bathroom, as Jazz was emerging and we were praying and my son was murmuring to his soon-to-be-born baby, I looked over at an empty corner and I saw them. My ancestors were there. Huddled together, holding hands, women, men, children with golden hair. They, like me, were entranced by this birth. “Here she comes,” they exulted. “Here comes another one!” My ancestors, lost in the Holocaust, lost to me always, were there. I began to sob.

Through my tears I saw Jazz emerge and my ancestors fade. She was cradled in her parents’ arms, then in the midwife’s and then she was handed to me.

In that moment I was changed on a cellular level. My life of lack, of generations lost to the Holocaust, the tragic past of my family – it all changed.

My granddaughter, my golden-haired Jazz, had just brought me the future.”
