Slipper Camp: Home

Dear Writers,

Welcome to the first Slipper Camp on the subject of HOME. I have been contemplating this subject for months as I searched through 100’s of possible prompts to find 30 that spoke to me. And, hopefully, to you.

HOME.

As the daughter of European refugees who fled the Nazis in Vienna for America in 1938, leaving their families and their whole lives behind to start anew, the concept of home is actually one I’ve always pondered. Now, for the next twenty days, we will explore the notion of home together.

The idea of home is basic and a breathtakingly universal need.  After her great adventure, Dorothy realized, “There’s no place like home.”

Robert Frost said, “Home is the place where, when you have to go there, they have to take you in.” Home is supposed to be where the heart is. Home can be a person or a pet or a place or…. you name it.

Whatever your experience, the prompts in this Slipper Camp are designed to guide you through writing 10,000 words about HOME in your own unique way.

Note – I want you to write specifically about the way you feel about home, not about HOME in general. Slipper Camp is not designed for writing impersonal essays. It’s designed for you to write your own story (or to write fiction about characters who are as real to you as the person sitting next to you.)

In all prompts you will be prompted to write one moment at a time. To use original detail in your writing. To be as specific as you can about whatever you write.

I hope you will be 1 of 5 writers who will receive 3 illustrated prompts about HOME every OTHER morning for 20 days along with daily writing tips and coaching suggestions. You will be writing 1,000 words (2 pages) on 1 of the 3 daily prompts and sending it to me by midnight every OTHER day. I will read them each day and we will talk about your writing at the end of Slipper Camp.

Starts September 15th, Ends October 3rd. Over 400 writers/non-writers have taken this structured online writing class since 2011.

Please email me at lspravina21@gmail.com me for further details or sign up on Facebook.

Can’t wait to read your writings.

Slipper Camp: Bloodline/Family

unnamed (3)

My next online writing Slipper Camp – Bloodline – begins on the day after Father’s Day, June 21st. I was inspired by this quote: ‘Walking, I am listening to a deeper way. Suddenly all my ancestors are behind me. Be still, they say. Watch and listen. You are the result of the love of thousands’- Linda Hogan.

We will be writing about our ancestors and our current family. This hits home for me, a daughter of the Holocaust whose family perished in the camps. As always, you can stay home and write in your pjs and slippers. As always, if you enroll you will receive 3 prompts a day on Bloodline/Family (every other day) for 20 days. As always, you will write 1,000 words on a prompt of your choosing and send it to me every other day.

If you want to join Slipper Camp please email me at lspravina21@gmail.com and I’ll send you details. Starts June 21. Ends July 9.

THANK YOU

Slipper Camp: Mothers and Daughters

18620919_10154365723495957_6723926101871604873_o

As Mother’s Day approaches I think about my own mother and her mother before her. The grandmother I never knew, the gentle woman who died in Auschwitz.

My mother, who escaped with my father, became a motherless daughter when she was only 24. She never got to say goodbye to her mother. And she never got over the loss.

I was raised by a woman with a deep motherwound. A wound she tried to heal by pouring her love into my brother and me. When that didn’t heal her grief she became a painter who poured her sorrow and joy onto canvases of color and light.

I was inspired to create MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS ONLINE WRITING SLIPPER CAMP when I studied this photo of my mother and me.

At three months old I’m trying to leap out of her arms. Eager to see the world. Unwilling to be contained. Looking for something out there, something my mother can’t give me.

My mother smiles tentatively. Her eyes are looking somewhere else, too. Somewhere she longs to be. We can’t connect.

That set the template of our entire relationship.

Five years ago I created 30 illustrated prompts for Mothers and Daughters Online Writing Slipper Camp, a 20 day course. Every year, I rewrite the prompts. Every year I’m blown away by the writings I receive.

I hope you will be one of ten writers who sign up for Mothers and Daughters Online Writing Slipper Camp. It begins the day after Mother’s Day, May 9th, and ends May 28th.

– You will receive three illustrated prompts every other day.

– You will send me 1,000 words on whatever prompt you choose.

– I will read everything you write.

– By the end of Slipper Camp you will have written 10,000 words.

– Then we will talk about your writings.

– It’s only open to the first ten writers who sign up.

– Please PM me for tuition cost and details.

– Payment secures your spot.

** Mothers and Daughters Online Writing Slipper Camp is a fundraiser for mothers and daughters in Ukraine. A portion of every tuition will go to www.Care.com – they are on the ground in Ukraine.

Slipper Camp – the secrets we carry

14045671_10153633106835957_234975491548260101_n

I’d like to invite you to my next available Slipper Camp.

The topic: the secrets we carry.

All of us have secrets. In this online writing ‘Slipper Camp’ we will be writing about our secrets, both light and dark, our deepest fears and shames but also our secret strengths. That’s why I love the quote above from Marianne Williamson-that it is our potential and power that frightens us and keeps us small. That perhaps the greatest secret we carry is that of our own magnificence.

It will be the same format: 10 writers will receive 3 illustrated prompts about the secrets we carry every OTHER morning for 20 days along with daily writing tips and coaching suggestions.

Limit: 10 writers
Starts: March 22nd ends April 9th
Please let me know if you’re interested in joining us.
Payment secures your spot.

Slipper Camp – Light in the Dark

“Better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.”

Those are the words on the Christopher Award I won for creating a movie about hunger in America. They are truer today than ever before.

My next online writing Slipper Camp – Light in the Dark – will inspire you to write about hope, love, and kindness in the world around us. I hope you will be one of the 10 writers who will receive illustrated prompts about Light in the Dark every other morning for 20 days, along with coaching suggestions. You will be writing 1,000 words every OTHER DAY and sending them to me by midnight.

Please join us.

Upcoming: #SlipperCamp: #Mindfulness

14568199_10153759094655957_6486554691410864052_n

I’ve been searching for awhile for the next topic of my online writing Slipper Camp. This one will take us into the the election and past it. (Starting October 29, ending 20 days later.) We will be writing at a heightened time, a critical time in our lives and the life of this country. I don’t need to remind any of us about that. Every topic I thought of I ended up rejecting. Not deep enough to create 30 prompts around at a time like this. Then I came upon this photo. It reminded me of one I took years ago on Fire Island. A photo of a majestic sand castle I found early one morning as the tide was coming in. And I marveled at the non-attachment of building such a creation, knowing it would be destroyed by the next wave. So here’s the topic of the next online writing Slipper Camp – Mindfulness. We’ll be writing about times we’ve lived our lives in every moment. Times we’ve been present even as we’ve built and loved, knowing that life can change in a moment. Like a beautiful sand castle that’s washed away by the next wave. Impermanence. Non-attachment. The circle of life. Hope and faith. Mindfulness. That’s what I’m creating prompts about. I hope you’ll be writing along with me.

It will be the same format as always – 10 writers will receive 3 illustrated prompts about Mindfulness every OTHER morning for 20 days along with daily writing tips and coaching suggestions.

You’ll be writing 1,000 words (2 pages) on 1 of the 3 daily prompts and sending them to me by midnight every OTHER day. Whenever I get your words I’ll read them and let you know I got them. At the end of Slipper Camp we’ll set a one-hour call to talk about your writings.

Hundreds of writers have taken this structured online writng course over the past years. The most common comment I hear is that the combination of structure and accountability yields good writing. Books, screenplays, a play, two novels and numerous published articles have been generated in Slipper Camps.

If you want to write online with me, please PM me and we’ll send you details. Starts October 29. Limited to 10 writers, 5 spaces taken already.

THANK YOU
